Osceola is the county where the free option is thinnest. The county facility on Bass Road, south of the Kissimmee tourist strip past Give Kids the World, is set up for yard waste, white goods, tires and hazardous waste, not for a garage cleanout. It will turn away household trash, furniture, carpet and construction debris at the gate.

For those, the two public options are the City of St. Cloud's transfer station, which weighs you in and out and takes loads from outside the city at a different rate, and the JED Landfill east of St. Cloud, a private Waste Connections site that accepts residential self-haul. Kissimmee, Poinciana and Celebration residents are closer to Bass Road; St. Cloud and Harmony are closer to the other two.

When a hauler beats the free option in Osceola County

If you have a pickup and a Saturday, St. Cloud's transfer station is the cheap route for a mixed load: furniture, carpet and drywall all go, and the minimum is three dollars. What trips people up is Bass Road. It's the county site, it's the closest one to Kissimmee and Poinciana, and it will send a couch or a bag of household trash back out the gate. Tires and appliances are fine there; the rest isn't.
