Lake Alfred calls itself the City of Lakes, and with more than ten of them inside the city area it earns it: Lake Alfred, Lake Haines, Lake Rochelle and the rest, several connected to Winter Haven's Chain of Lakes. The town was settled in 1883 after the South Florida Railroad arrived, by people escaping the cold of North Dakota, and named in 1913 for the lake and its early settler Alfred Parslow.

The homes are older, many mid-century, with lakefront rebuilds happening one lot at a time. The city has grown but says out loud that it wants to keep the small-town feel, and it mostly has.
