Carports and patio slabs behind Lake Alfred's mid-century homes

The streets off US-17-92 fill with 1950s and 1960s homes, and most were built with a carport on one side and a patio slab out back. Sixty years on, the carport roof is rusted, the posts are rotted at the base, and the slab has cracked where the roots got under it. The carport comes down in a morning: roofing off, frame apart, posts pulled with their footings, all of it on the trailer. The slab is a separate decision. If a new carport or a paver patio is going on it, Rob leaves it. If you want lawn, the track loader's breaker cracks it and a partner dump truck hauls it to a recycler, quoted as its own line, because concrete doesn't ride in the dump trailers.

Fences, pergolas and walks on the lakefront lots

Lakefront lots on Lake Haines, Lake Rochelle and the rest of the ten lakes are being bought and rebuilt one at a time, and before the old house comes down, the yard gets cleared: a wood fence along the side lot, a pergola over what was a patio, a front walk from the original build. Rob's crew pulls the fence with its posts, drops the pergola, and lifts the walk. The wood rides the trailer and the walk goes on the dump-truck pile. Lakefront driveways are short, so the trailer stays on the drive and the crew carries pieces to it.

Lake Alfred is 18 minutes from the yard and trucks pass through daily on the way to Winter Haven and Auburndale, so a fence or a carport called in before noon usually goes the same day. Concrete gets a scheduled date so the loader and the dump truck line up. Rob quotes flat from photos, holds the number, and takes payment when the yard is raked. Paint and pool chemicals found under a carport go to the county facility a few miles down the road. Permit questions go to the City of Lake Alfred building department; when a job needs one, Rob works with a general contractor.
