Eagle Lake is one of Polk County's small ones. It started as a settlement in 1880 when John Bingham bought 160 acres on a knoll between the lakes now called Eagle Lake, Crystal Lake and Spirit Lake, and named the lake by his cabin for a bald eagle nesting in a pine. The town was laid out around 1887 and incorporated in 1921. The old brickyard, turpentine mill and two citrus packing houses are gone; the lakes are still there.

Today it's roughly 3,000 residents between Winter Haven and Bartow along US-17, close to the Polk Parkway and I-4. The city motto since the 1980s is Growing with People in Mind, and it has grown a little, but the housing is mostly older: block homes from the 1950s and 1960s, a few lakefront places, and yards big enough for a shed and a boat.
