Frostproof got its name from the freeze of December 1894, which wrecked most of Florida's citrus and left this town's groves mostly standing. The reason is geography: the town sits high on the Lake Wales Ridge, on a strip of land between Reedy Lake to the east and Lake Clinch to the west, and the water moderates the cold. Lake Clinch has public access just blocks from downtown near Wall Street.

It's still a grove town. Reedy Lake is ringed by citrus and homes. US-27 runs through, about 25 miles south of Winter Haven, and the lakes down here, Reedy, Crooked, Clinch, Arbuckle, are the far northern headwaters of the Everglades. The housing is small-town Florida: older homes near downtown, lakefront places, and acreage with a grove or pasture out the back.
