Who Hauls Away Old Refrigerators Near Davenport, FL?

Every path for getting rid of a refrigerator around Davenport comes down to four people: the store delivering your new one, the city or county truck, a scrap collector, or a hauler like me. Free exists on that list. It also comes with strings, and the strings are usually a wait, a curb and a unit that still runs. Here's the map.

Will the appliance store take the old fridge?

Often, if you ask before the delivery is booked. Most retailers offer haul-away when the new unit lands, sometimes rolled into delivery and sometimes as a line item. The conditions are what trip people up. The old fridge has to be empty, unplugged and pulled out where the delivery crew can reach it. Some crews take it only from the same spot the new one goes. If the old fridge is in the garage and the new one goes in the kitchen, ask ahead, because that's not always covered.

This is the easiest route when you're replacing a fridge anyway. It doesn't help when the fridge died and you're not buying, when you're clearing a rental with three of them, or when you ordered online and a parcel carrier is bringing the new one.

Does the city pick up refrigerators?

Some cities do, and I only repeat what I read on their pages. Rules change; check the links at the bottom before you set anything out.

Haines City lists refrigerators and freezers among the appliances collected as bulk waste on your regular garbage day.

Kissimmee collects appliances weekly on a set bulk day, charges by the cubic yard, and says fridge doors go down or come off first.

Lakeland takes used appliances including refrigerators on a scheduled bulk pickup, with four free collections a year, and the door has to be removed before the truck comes.

Unincorporated Polk County, which includes most of the Davenport-address subdivisions and Loughman, gets furniture and appliance collection on a schedule through the county's residential service.

Here's the catch in every one of those: the fridge has to be at the curb, on the right day, and you're the one who gets it there. A fridge through a kitchen doorway, down two steps and across the lawn is a two-person job with a dolly. Then it sits on the curb until the truck comes, doors off, in the rain.

What about scrap collectors?

There are people who drive neighborhoods looking for metal on the curb, and a fridge is metal. If you put one out in a busy subdivision off US-27 it might disappear before the city truck gets there. Whether it happens depends on luck. It also only works if you can get it to the curb, which is the same problem as above. A working fridge listed for free online moves faster than a dead one. Nobody drives across Polk County for a dead fridge.

Why is free pickup so rare?

Three reasons, and none of them are a scam.

1. Freon. A fridge can't ride in a regular trash load. The refrigerant has to be recovered by someone with the equipment, so every stop between your kitchen and the shredder costs somebody money.
2. The carry. A fridge is heavy, tall and awkward. Free programs pick up from the curb because the curb is the only place a one-driver truck can grab it.
3. Timing. Free runs on the city's calendar. If the new fridge is coming Thursday and the old one has to be out Wednesday, the free program's next date is the problem.

When does paying for pickup make sense?

When you can't wait, can't lift it, or can't get it to the curb. That's most of the calls I get. A landlord in Poinciana with a tenant arriving Friday. A daughter in Haines City clearing her mother's garage. A homeowner in Davenport whose fridge died Tuesday and whose new one is coming from a website with no haul-away. The quote covers the walk-out, the drive and the refrigerant recovery at the scrap yard, and near Davenport it's often gone the same afternoon.
