How to Get Rid of a Couch in Polk County, FL

A couch leaves a Polk County house one of four ways: the curb on bulk day, a donation truck, a trip to the county in a pickup, or a hauler. Which one is right depends on whether the couch is still good, whether you can get it out the door, and how long you're willing to look at it in the driveway. Here's each route without the sales pitch.

Can I put a couch on the curb in Polk County?

In most places, yes, on the right day. What I read on the city and county pages:

• Haines City collects bulk waste on your regular garbage day and lists household furniture, including tables, chairs, dressers and desks, as accepted items.
• Lakeland picks up couches and chairs by request, with four free collections a year up to 20 cubic yards each. You email or call first.
• Unincorporated Polk County, where most Davenport-address subdivisions and Loughman sit, has furniture and appliance collection on a schedule through the county's residential service.
• Winter Haven runs bulk pickup as a scheduled-only service through its Access Winter Haven system.

The curb works when you can wait for the day, can carry the couch out yourself, and don't mind it soaking up one Florida afternoon storm on the way. A wet couch weighs far more than a dry one and drips on whoever lifts it next.

Will anyone take a used couch as a donation?

Case by case, and only if it's actually usable. That means no rips, no stains, no pet smell, no sagging frame. Donation centers pass on more couches than they accept, because a couch that can't be sold costs them a dump fee. If yours is clean and solid, I'll set it aside, usually for Goodwill or the Salvation Army, and tell you honestly if it's one they'll take. Recliners have a mechanism underneath that hooks on the threshold.

This is the reason a couch sits in a Davenport living room for a month after somebody decided it should go. Two people who move furniture every day plan the route before they lift: which end first, door off the hinges if it's close, blankets on the corners. That's most of what you pay for with a pickup.

Can I take a couch to the county dump myself?

If you have a truck, yes. The Northeast Landfill Customer Convenience Center on Bannon Island Road in Haines City takes bulk items for a flat $10 per pickup, $18 or $27 with a trailer, for Polk County residents with proof of residency. Hours are weekdays 9 to 3 and Saturday 9 to 1. The North Central Transfer Station in Auburndale charges by the ton with a $10 minimum. One warning for the Poinciana side of the line: Osceola's Bass Road facility refuses furniture outright, so a couch has to go to the St. Cloud transfer station instead. What about a couch with bed bugs?

Tell me. That's the one rule. A flagged couch gets bagged before it comes through the house, goes straight on the trailer, and lands at the landfill or transfer station. It never gets set aside for donation and it never rides next to someone else's furniture. Nobody's judging you for it; I'd just rather know at the curb than after.

How much does couch removal cost?

From $125 for one couch, sectional or sleeper, carried out from wherever it is and hauled. That's the job minimum and it's all-inclusive: stairs, tight doors, the drive. A couch plus a loveseat and two chairs is usually a quarter trailer at $225. If the couch goes with a whole room's worth of furniture, that's a half at $350.
