Where to Dispose of a Treadmill in Central Florida

The treadmill was a good idea in January. By fall it's a coat rack that weighs as much as a fridge, and there isn't a simple place to put it. The thrift store doesn't want it. The trash truck won't touch it. It doesn't fit in a sedan. Here's where a treadmill, an elliptical or a Bowflex can actually go in Central Florida, and what each route costs you in time and back pain.

Why won't the thrift store take my treadmill?

Because they can't sell it. Exercise machines have motors, control boards and belts that wear out, and a donation center can't test them or fix them. Most of the drop-off crews I've dealt with wave off anything with a motor, and the big cable machines get refused for taking up half the floor. A dumbbell set or a weight bench is a different story. Those are small, they don't break, and they sell. If the machine works and you'd like it used, I'll set it aside case by case, usually for Goodwill or the Salvation Army, and I'll tell you straight whether it's one they'll take that week.

Will someone from Marketplace come get it?

Maybe. A working treadmill listed for free gets messages within the hour. Then the messages turn into "is it still available," then "can you hold it until Saturday," then a no-show. The one who does show up needs a second person and a truck, and a treadmill doesn't fold small enough for most SUVs. A broken one gets zero replies. If you have time and patience, a working machine can leave this way. Have it in the garage, not upstairs, or you'll be the second person on the carry.

Can I take it to the county dump?

The common thread: you load it, you drive it, you unload it, on their hours. Hillsborough's page says staff don't assist and you have to be able to lift your items at least four feet. A treadmill deck is a two-person lift into a truck bed. So the dump is the right answer if you own a truck, have a friend, and the machine is already in the garage.

What does a treadmill pickup cost with Big Rob's?

From $125 for one machine, and the number includes the parts people don't expect:

• Disassembly. Ellipticals don't fit through a bedroom door in one piece. Bowflex and cable machines have a weight stack and forty bolts. The crew brings tools and takes it apart where it has to.
• Stairs. Most home gyms are upstairs. The carry down is in the price, not a surprise on the invoice.
• The scrap run. The steel frame and the weight stack go to the scrap yard when the facility takes them. Belts, decks and plastic go with the landfill load.

Two machines, or a treadmill plus a bench and plates, is usually a quarter trailer at $225. A whole garage gym with a rack, a rower and a floor of rubber mats is a half at $350. Text a photo and I'll tell you which one before we come.

What should I do before pickup?

1. Unplug it and pull the safety key. Toss the key; nobody needs it.
2. If it folds, fold it. If it doesn't, leave it. Don't take it apart yourself unless you want to.
3. Clear the path. A treadmill on its side is wider than a hallway with a bookshelf in it.
4. Tell me the floor and whether there's a landing turn. That changes the crew, not the price.
