Where Donated and Recycled Junk Really Goes in Polk County

People ask me if I'm a green junk removal company. The honest answer is: sometimes, item by item, and I won't hand you a number I can't back up. Here's where each thing on a load actually goes when it leaves your driveway in Davenport, Kissimmee or Winter Haven, and what I do and don't do to keep it out of the ground.

Do junk removal companies really donate?

Some of it, some of the time. When a load has a solid dresser, a dining set, working small appliances or boxes of kitchen stuff, I'll set it aside and run it to a donation drop. That's usually Goodwill or the Salvation Army, whichever is closer to the job and taking furniture that day. They're the destination, not my business partners, and they decide at the door. If a couch has a tear or a pet smell, they won't take it, and it goes on the trailer with everything else.

What makes donation more likely: tell me before the crew arrives what you'd like donated, and keep it separate from the junk. A chair buried under bags of trash gets loaded as trash. A chair standing by itself in the garage gets a second look. The estate cleanout checklist has a longer list of what donation centers usually accept and refuse.

What actually gets recycled?

Three things, reliably.

Scrap metal. Bed frames, grills, filing cabinets, exercise machines, water heaters, patio sets. Metal pays by the pound at the yard instead of costing by the ton at the landfill, so I have every reason to pull it out. On a mixed load, metal gets its own corner of the trailer.

Fridges and freezers. These never go in the landfill pile. They go to the scrap yard, where the refrigerant is recovered by the people set up to do it, and then the steel is processed. It's the one item on any load whose destination I can name every time. Polk County's own fee schedule charges $50 a ton for fridges and freezers with Freon still in them and $27.50 without, which tells you the county wants that gas out too.

Cardboard. A move-in generates a small mountain of it. Flattened cardboard goes to recycling, not the trash pile. Polk County lists cardboard among the recyclables it takes in the drop-off container at the North Central Landfill, along with cans, paper and plastics #1, #2 and #5.

Where does the rest go?

The county landfill or transfer station, and I'm not going to dress that up. Broken particleboard, stained mattresses, wet carpet, old drywall, the contents of a hoarded room: that's landfill material and there's no facility in Polk County I can point to that would take it for reuse.

Why won't I give you a recycling percentage?

Because the number would be made up. Some haulers advertise that most of what they collect is diverted from the landfill. Maybe they track it. I don't have a scale on my trailer and I don't weigh the donation pile against the landfill pile. What I can tell you is what I do on every job: pull the metal, take the fridges to the scrap yard, drop off the good furniture, flatten the boxes, and dump the rest at the county landfill where I pay $46 a ton for it. If you want a percentage, ask the company quoting one how they measured it.

What can't go to the landfill at all?

Paint, solvents, oil, propane, pool chemicals and batteries. I don't carry them, and the landfill won't take them either. Polk County residents drop them free at the county's hazardous waste facility in Winter Haven. Concrete and dirt don't ride in my trailers; those go to partner dump trucks and recyclers, quoted per job. The what we won't take post covers the whole list.
