Shed Removal: Cost and Process in Polk County, FL

A shed is the thing in the backyard that everybody stops seeing. Then it leans. Or the roof goes. Or you sell the house and the buyer wants it gone. Here's how I take one down and haul it in the same visit, and what actually changes the price.

What does shed removal cost?

I don't post a number, because there isn't one number. A shed job is quoted flat, before we start, from a few photos and a couple of questions. Five things move it.

The honest version: call for a quote. Text me a photo of the shed, tell me what's in it and whether the slab goes, and you'll have a flat number fast.

How does the job go?

One visit. That's the point.

1. Walk it. I look at the structure, the slab, and the path to the trailer.
2. Empty it. If you haven't, the crew does. Anything you're keeping gets set aside where you point.
3. Take it apart. Roof, then walls, then floor. Resin sheds unclip. Wood sheds get cut into trailer-sized pieces. Metal gets folded.
4. Slab, if it goes. Broken up and staged separately, because concrete rides out on a partner dump truck, not the dump trailer.
5. Load, sweep, haul. The dump trailer leaves with everything. You get a bare spot and a rake job.

Rachel's job was the full version: shed emptied and taken apart, plus a concrete driveway removed in the same visit. Francis had already disassembled his shed and just needed it gone. The crew came out the same day he called.

What should I do before the crew arrives?

You don't have to do any of this, but each one saves time and keeps the quote where it started.

• Empty it if you can. Or at least pull out what you're keeping.
• Kill the power. If the shed has a light or an outlet, turn off the breaker and tell me. A licensed electrician should disconnect anything hardwired before demo.
• Check about permits. Some cities and Polk County have rules about removing accessory structures, especially with a slab. Call your city or the county building department first. I'm not the permit office, but I'll tell you if your job looks like the kind that usually needs one.
• Mark the gate. Tell me the gate width. If it's under about four feet, the crew carries pieces through by hand. Wider, and the small skid steer can help.
• Know what's under it. Irrigation lines, a septic lid, a buried cable. Florida's Sunshine 811 is free and marks underground utilities before anyone digs.

What about old sheds and asbestos?

If the shed is old enough to have cement-board siding, or you're unsure and it was built before 1980, get the siding tested before anyone breaks it. Asbestos removal is a licensed abatement job, not a hauler's. Same with peeling lead paint on an old wood shed. It's rare on backyard sheds around here, but it's not my call to make for you, and I'd rather say it than find out after.

Can you do the slab?

Yes. A shed slab is usually a few inches of concrete, and it comes up in pieces with a breaker and the skid steer bucket. Concrete doesn't ride in my dump trailers, so I partner with dump trucks and recyclers to haul it and quote that part per job. Some people leave the slab for the next shed or a patio. Some want it gone so the yard is grass again. Either way you'll see the two numbers and pick.

Where the shed goes

Wood and shingles go to the landfill or transfer station with the day's load. Clean metal gets separated as scrap. Resin panels are landfill. The slab goes out on a partner dump truck to a recycler, and some facilities take separately. I don't claim a recycling percentage I can't prove, but the metal does get pulled out.

Should I take it apart myself first?

You can. Francis did, and the crew picked up the pieces the same day he called. If you're handy and the shed is resin or thin metal, an afternoon with a drill and a helper gets it flat, and the haul-away is priced as a pile instead of a demo. Stack the panels by the driveway so the crew can load fast.

Two cautions. Wood sheds with a shingled roof are heavier than they look, and the roof comes off in one bad moment if you cut the wrong thing. And a shed with power, or one with a slab you want gone, is better left whole for the crew. There's no saving in half-demolishing something and then calling me to finish it; I still have to bring the same people and the same trailer.

What if the shed is full of junk?

Then it's a shed removal and a shed cleanout on the same ticket. The crew empties it first. Mowers, gas cans and paint get set aside for you to deal with, because those can't ride on the trailer. Everything else, from the broken patio set to the boxes from the last move, loads with the shed pieces. Rachel's shed was cleaned out and taken apart in the same visit, and the crew left the yard cleaned up. Tell me when you call that it's full so I bring a bigger trailer and the right number of hands.
