Dump Trailer Rental vs. Junk Removal: Which Is Cheaper?

People call me for a dumpster and I tell them I don't have one. What I have is better for most driveways: two sizes of dump trailer, 14 and 16 yards, that I drop myself and haul away when you're done. Then the real question comes up. Should you rent the trailer and load it yourself, or have my crew come and take it all in one visit? Here's how I'd decide, job by job.

What's the difference between the two?

Junk removal means my crew shows up, loads everything you point at, sweeps, and leaves with it. You don't lift anything. It's one flat price by load size, quoted before we start. It's usually the same day you call if you're within about half an hour of Davenport.

A dump trailer rental means I back a 14 or 16-yard trailer into your driveway and leave it. You fill it on your own schedule. When it's full or you're done, I hook up and haul it to the landfill. You pay for the trailer, the drop and the dump run as one number. Your labor is free because it's yours.

Same trailers either way. The difference is who loads.

Which is cheaper for my job?

If you're between rows, the tiebreaker is time. A trailer buys you days. A crew buys you back today.

How do the two get priced?

The rental side is published. A 14-yard dump trailer is $350 and a 16-yard is $400. Both are a 3-day rental with 2 tons of weight included, and the number covers the drop, the pickup and the dump run. Extra days are $40 each. No fuel fee, no landfill bill on the back end.

The junk removal side is published too. From $125 for a single item, which is also the minimum. $225 for a quarter trailer. $350 for a half. $700 for a full. Every one of those is all-inclusive: stairs, heavy items and drive time are in the number, quoted from a photo before we come out.

So here's the real comparison. A one-car garage is a half trailer. Rent a 14-yard and load it yourself over the weekend: $350. Have my crew do it in a morning: $350. Same number. The difference is your Saturday. A two-car garage is a full trailer: $700 with the crew, or $350 to $400 for a trailer you fill yourself, and that's where renting saves real money if you have the back for it. A single couch starts from $125 with the crew and doesn't make sense to rent for at all.

Weight is where the two split. Every rental includes 2 tons, and past that it's $70 per ton; I keep a card on file so it settles cleanly. Shingles and tile are the loads that get there. Concrete and dirt don't go in the trailer at all, on either plan; I partner with dump trucks and recyclers for those and quote them per job.

One more wrinkle. If you rent and then realize halfway through that you don't want to finish loading, call. Ask about crew time and we'll finish the trailer on pickup day. Plenty of people do exactly that with the heavy pieces.

When has each one actually happened?

The rental side: a contractor in Clermont showed up to a jobsite and realized he had way more refuse than he expected. I got a dump trailer out to him the same day and helped him load it, and I didn't give him a hard time when he filled it past the line. That's the trailer at its best. Rachel rented one for a family-home cleanout in Pine Hills, in west Orlando. I dropped it myself, backing it through a narrow gate and down a wooded drive that no roll-off truck was ever going to reach.

The junk removal side: Sonjia's four-bedroom, three-bath house in Kissimmee filled multiple full trailers, two of them from the garage alone. She wasn't going to do that with a rental. Noah cleared his garage remotely over two FaceTime calls the day after he called. He never lifted a box.

What does the trailer rental actually include?

• The drop, placed where you want it if the ground and the gate allow.
• Three days. A fourth or fifth is $40 each.
• Two tons of weight. Past that it's $70 per ton, on the card I keep on file. No concrete or dirt.
• The pickup and the dump run. You never see a landfill bill.
• One trailer size that fits your job: 14-yard for $350 or 16-yard for $400. I'll tell you which on the phone.

Dimensions are still a call. I'd rather tell you the real length and side height for the trailer in your driveway than print one here that doesn't match.

What can't go in the trailer?

The same list as junk removal. Paint, solvents, pesticides, fuel, propane, oil and batteries stay out. Polk County residents can drop household hazardous waste free at the county facility at the North Central Landfill in Winter Haven. Asbestos and medical waste need their own programs. Don't fill it past the top rail. I'll tell you why on the phone, but the short version is the load has to be legal to tow and safe to dump.

Why dump trailers and not roll-offs?

Because of where my customers live. Davenport, ChampionsGate, Celebration and Four Corners are gated subdivisions with HOAs and narrow driveways. A roll-off truck needs room to slide a steel can off its rails, and it leaves marks on pavers. A dump trailer behind a pickup fits in a normal driveway, backs through a gate, and is gone the day you call. HOAs that would never allow a can on the street don't notice a trailer in the driveway for a few days.
